Nepal Tamang Samaj Japan (NPO) has officially announced the “Manjushree Era 2862 (Year of the Horse) Sonam Lhosar 2026 Grand Cultural Program,” which will be celebrated in Tokyo and seven other major cities across Japan.
Sonam Lhosar, the Tamang New Year, is one of the most important cultural festivals of the Tamang community. The 2026 celebrations aim to preserve Tamang cultural identity, strengthen community unity among the Nepali diaspora in Japan, and introduce Tamang traditions to a broader international audience.
Renowned Artists from Nepal and Japan to Perform
As part of the grand celebrations, renowned singer and music composer Mr. Bishwo Dong and popular Tamang singer Ms. Jitu Lopchan, specially invited from Nepal, will headline the event with exclusive live performances.
They will be joined by Japan-based Tamang artists including Anil Lama, Karma Dong Tamang, and Janak Thokar, along with many other singers, dancers, and cultural performers. The program will feature traditional Tamang music, folk dances, and cultural tableaux, reflecting the richness of Tamang heritage.
Organizers stated that the event is not only a celebration but also a cultural preservation initiative, especially for younger generations growing up abroad.

The Sonam Lhosar 2026 celebrations will take place on the following dates and locations:
- January 18, 2026 – Tokyo
Time: 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM - January 17 – Kita Kanto
- January 19 – Okinawa
- January 20 – Kyushu
- January 24 – Sendai
- January 25 – Shizuoka
- January 30 – Osaka
- January 31 – Nagoya
These multi-city events are expected to attract thousands of Tamang community members and cultural enthusiasts across Japan.
