Popular singer and actor Prashant Tamang, winner of Indian Idol Season 3, has died at the age of 42. He suffered a sudden heart attack in New Delhi, according to family sources.
Doctors declared him dead at a hospital in Dwarka on Sunday morning.

From Police Constable to National Icon
Prashant Tamang was born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling. He came from a modest family background.
After losing his father early, he joined the Kolkata Police to support his family. During this time, he sang with the police orchestra and continued to pursue music.
In 2007, he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3. His voice, discipline, and humility won over audiences nationwide. He later won the competition and became a household name.
Music Career and Cultural Impact
After winning Indian Idol, Tamang released several music albums. His victory became a moment of pride for Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities worldwide.
“Many Nepali singers dared to dream bigger because of Prashant,” filmmaker Ghatani said. He added that Tamang opened doors for future artists on national platforms.
Successful Transition into Acting
Tamang also built a strong acting career. He starred in the Nepali film Gorkha Paltan, which received positive audience response.
He later appeared in Paatal Lok Season 2 and Salman Khan’s film Battle of Galwan.
Actor Anup Bikram Shahi, who worked with him, described Tamang as friendly and professional. He said the news still feels unreal.

Singer Pramod Kharel said he learned about the death through musicians from Darjeeling. Many artists shared tributes on social media.
Sources said Tamang’s mother-in-law first discovered the tragedy. She informed his close friend and fellow Indian Idol contestant Amit Paul, who later shared the news publicly.

Prashant Tamang is survived by his wife and daughter. He had been living in Janakpuri, New Delhi.
Family members are discussing whether his last rites will take place in Delhi or Darjeeling.
