Preserving and Promoting Tamang Culture, Identity, and Rights in Portugal
Tamang Society Portugal is a community-based cultural and social organization established to preserve, promote, and strengthen the unique identity of the Tamang people in Portugal and at the international level. The organization works actively to safeguard Tamang traditions, language, script, festivals, and indigenous institutions while supporting the overall development and empowerment of the Tamang community.
Our Mission and Objectives
The primary mission of Tamang Society Portugal is to promote the distinct cultural identity of the Tamang community, including:
- Traditional life-cycle rituals from birth to death
- Sonam Lhosar, the Tamang New Year festival
- The Tamang language and script
- Indigenous cultural institutions such as Tamba, Bonbo, Lama, and Gamba
- Preservation and promotion of Tamang customs, values, and heritage
We aim to play a vital role in the cultural promotion, unity, sustainable development, and international recognition of Tamang culture, particularly within the Nepali diaspora in Portugal.
Community Development and Advocacy
Tamang Society Portugal works collectively and in coordination with other Nepali associations and organizations operating in Portugal to contribute to the political, social, cultural, economic, and educational advancement of the Tamang community.
Our key focus areas include:
- Protection and promotion of Tamang rights and indigenous identity
- Preservation and development of language, script, culture, and traditions
- Policy development on common Tamang community issues
- Leadership development and youth empowerment
- Promotion and protection of human rights
- Collaboration, dialogue, planning, and partnership for sustainable development
Through awareness campaigns, community programs, and strategic planning, the organization strives to empower the Tamang people and promote unity and social inclusion.
Establishment History
Tamang Society Portugal was officially established on:
- Manjushree Sambat: 2847 (Hyoe Lho – Year of the Cat)
- Bikram Sambat: 2067, Magh 23
- Gregorian Date: February 6, 2011 (Sunday)
The founding meeting was held at Gorkha Palace Restaurant, located at Marques de Pombal, Rua Luciano Cordeiro, Lisbon, Portugal. The organization was formally established in the presence of Nepali Tamang community members residing in Portugal, representatives of active Nepali associations, and Nepali brothers, sisters, and well-wishers who had arrived from various parts of the world.
