Nepal Tamang Ghedung is the only unified, national-level representative organization of the Tamang community in Nepal, established in 2013 B.S. (1956 A.D.). The organization is legally registered with the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, and has been operating continuously as a community-based, non-profit, non-political indigenous organization.

Nepal Tamang Ghedung is one of the eight founding member organizations of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) and is also a member organization of the Governing Council of the National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN), established by the Government of Nepal.

Nepal Tamang Ghedung has an extensive global presence through affiliated Tamang organizations in more than 18 countries, including:

Kuwait, India, Israel, United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, South Korea, Bahrain, Macau, Belgium, Romania, Portugal, Japan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE (Dubai), Qatar, Hong Kong, Australia, Cyprus, Canada, and Iraq.

This global network connects the Tamang diaspora and strengthens coordination between Nepal-based and overseas Tamang institutions.

Identity, Role & Recognition

Nepal Tamang Ghedung is a Community-Based Organization of Indigenous Peoples (CBOS/IPOS), not a conventional NGO. It represents the collective political, social, cultural, economic, and educational movement of the Tamang community in Nepal.

The organization has played a historic role in:

  • Protection and promotion of Tamang mother tongue and script
  • Institutionalization and international recognition of Sonam Lhosar
  • Preservation of life-cycle rituals (birth to death traditions)
  • Promotion of Tamang cultural systems and diversity
  • Advocacy for indigenous rights, identity, and Tamangsaling territorial recognition

Impact & Contribution

Nepal Tamang Ghedung has been a driving force behind major social transformations within the Tamang community. From cultural revival to political representation and rights-based advocacy, many of the key achievements seen in Tamang society today are the result of Ghedung’s sustained institutional efforts.

By uniting Tamangs scattered across Nepal and the world under a shared identity and purpose, the organization has strengthened collective consciousness, empowerment, and social unity within the community.
